EXPERIENCE Freshly Foraged The mountains of Western North Carolina are filled with fresh, wild food ready to be gathered. At The Omni Grove Park Inn in Asheville, guests can join ecotour company and educational orga- nization No Taste Like Home to hike the area and discover at least a half-dozen edibles. During the approximately 1.5-hour experi- ence, you will learn to safely gather, serve and preserve wild mush- rooms, plants and other natural cuisine. Upon returning to the inn, deliver the found ingredients to the Guest Services desk, and the chef will incorporate them in a personalized appetizer for you at on-site restaurant Vue 1913. No Taste Like Home was founded by famed forager and educator Alan Muskat, who has been taking people “out to eat” for decades. In addition to founding the first forage-to-table tour company in the country, he launched the first wild foods public education program on the continent and runs one of the largest foraging tour compa- nies in the world. All of No Taste Like Home’s public outings fund its youth program. For nearly 20 years, Muskat has sold hundreds of pounds of wild foods each year to more than 75 restaurants and hotels, including The Omni Grove Park Inn. He currently serves on the North Carolina Wild Mushroom Advisory Committee. His expertise has led him to pop up in a variety of major media, and he was even invited to appear on “America’s Got Talent.” The creator of the film “GMO OMG” is now filming a documentary about Muskat’s work. Wild foods, Muskat says, are a way of feeling at home in the world, continually provided for and never alone. Book the tour online at NoTasteLikeHome.org/tours.
