EL TECHO, SAN FRANCISCO El Techo rises five stories above San Francisco, with views of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, Potrero Hill neighborhood and downtown. It’s a culinary gem both for visitors and locals. “We often have lines down the street,” says Eddie Concha, general manager of El Techo and its sister restaurant, Lolinda. Located above Lolinda, an Argentinian steak- house, El Techo serves the dishes and flavors of Latin American street food. One favorite is “chich- arrones de carne,” roasted and fried chunks of pork shoul- der served with house-made tortillas, lime, salsa, black bean purée and escabeche. The perfect complement to the chicharrones is one of El Techo’s signature cocktails. Options include a margarita crafted with pueblo viejo blanco tequila, lime and combier, or the piña colada, made with El Techo rum blend, coconut cream, pineapple, cinnamon and crushed ice. The rooftop bar is also known for its happy hour, run- ning Monday through Friday from 4-6 p.m. In addition to drink specials, small plates are available for $5. They include guacamole with cotija and served with tortilla chips; empanada de carne (ground beef, potatoes, egg, raisins, chimichurri); and pollo frito (fried chicken thigh with jalapeño, cabbage and habanero salsa). Pitchers of sangria and white wine flights also flow freely. ACME FEED & SEED, NASHVILLE Tucked between the honky-tonks that line Nashville’s down- town is Acme Feed & Seed, which offers spectacular fourth- floor rooftop views of the energetic nightlife on Broadway. “During the week, the rooftop is a relaxing environment for a casual lunch with table and lounge seating, as well as a full bar,” says Acme’s general manager, Monte Silva. “Once Friday comes around, Acme’s rooftop is the place to be on Broadway. The weekend kicks off right away with brunch and day parties, and our DJs keep the crowd going strong well into the night.” Known for its creative libations, Acme Feed & Seed offers a special cocktail list just for its roof. It includes a signature frozen drink, the Mule Kicker, a blend that includes Ole Smoky moonshine and soda. Another rooftop favorite is the Cow Tipper; similar to a piña colada, it’s made with Kenny Chesney’s Blue Chair Bay rum. The rooftop does not have its own food menu, but guests can bring food up from the first floor (Southern fare) or the second floor (upscale gastropub cuisine plus a sushi bar) of the restaurant. And when it comes to views, Acme is a Nashville stand- out with sights of the Cumberland River and the Nissan Stadium. “It’s especially nice when the stadium shoots off fireworks,” Silva says. • REIMAGINED ROOFTOP OMNI CHARLOTTE HOTEL TRANSFORMS ITS POOL DECK AND BAR SPACE INTO AN URBAN OASIS. Set in the city’s financial district, just steps away from a bustling dining and entertainment complex, Omni Charlotte Hotel is drawing upon the energy of its surroundings by significantly transforming its rooftop pool deck. The Omni Charlotte will more than double the size of its pool deck and add a new pool bar, dining area, cabanas and state-of-the- art video screens. “We are in an amazing location in downtown Charlotte and there’s a lot of activity happening here,” says Laura McKoy, creative director + vice president of interior design for Omni Hotels & Resorts. “We want to be a part of the city’s growth and give ourselves a fresh new look.” The rooftop space will have ample seating on one side of the pool and a comfortable dining space available on the other. Cabanas will line one area of the pool deck, while green space will provide a flexible gathering area. The hotel’s rooftop, which offers striking views of downtown including the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center, Discovery Place and the Epicentre entertainment district, will serve multiple purposes: It will offer swimming as well as a place to lounge, enjoy a cocktail or chat over dinner. Two double-sided LED television screens, measuring 22 feet wide by 12 feet high, will allow Omni to screen films on the weekends and in the evening, or play music videos during the day. “This is an exciting transformation for us, and we look forward to using this area almost year-round,” McKoy says. “The new rooftop deck is the perfect place to relax and unwind after a busy day in Charlotte.” FA L L 2 0 1 7 OE3-Roof-eV6-e.indd 63 | 63 | ESCAPES 9/29/17 3:29 PM
