E ach year, starting around April, more than a million wildebeests begin a perilous 1,800-mile round-trip pilgrimage in search of better grazing. Th ey travel across the mighty plains of the Serengeti in Tanzania to the Masai Mara in Kenya. Th is annual journey, which typically ends around November, is known as the Great Migration. Witnessing it is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. During their trek, the herds, accompanied by other animals such as zebras and antelope, face a number of predators. Lions, leopards, river crocodiles and others take advantage of the mass joining of prey. An estimated 250,000 wildebeest die en route, making the journey among some of the most awe-inspiring displays of beauty and bru- tality in wildlife. “Th e Great Migration is one of the most impressive mass movement of animals anywhere on the planet,” says Peter Felix, safari expert at Wild Frontiers, an adventure company. “… Quite simply, it’s such a signifi cant experience because … you won’t see anything on this scale any- where else on the planet.
