Taliesin West THE ROOKERY Wright spent many years studying, observing and building in arguably the nation’s most architecturally friendly city: Chicago. The Rookery, a departure from his usual original creations, was a remodeling proj- ect for Wright, who was commissioned to add his own personal touch to the office building located in the city’s Financial District. In 1905, after standing for 17 years, Wright added the famous two-story, skylit lobby to the high-rise. Designated as a Chicago Landmark in 1972, the building is famous for its lux- urious touches of décor, open-air light court and spi- raling iron staircase that spins up to the 12th floor. • TALIESIN WEST Wright once said, “Arizona needs its own architec- ture.” He later constructed his own winter home in the state. Located in the red canyons of Scottsdale, Arizona, Taliesin West is a meticulously crafted mon- ument dedicated to the modern American West. Established in 1937, the estate is distinguished by its imaginative exterior, sprawling surroundings and divine creativity by Wright. Perhaps the most personal project completed by the architect, the lush desert home blends in with its natural surround- ings, offering touring guests and summer art camp attendees inspiration around every sweeping corner. In honor of Frank Lloyd Wright’s 150th birthday, the Arizona Cantilena Chorale will perform a special, one-time concert on Oct. 28 at Taliesin West. Located in Scottsdale, Arizona, Taliesin West is less than a 30-minute drive from Omni Scottsdale Resort & Spa at Montelucia. The concert will feature music by three American composers: Randall Thompson’s “Frostiana: Seven Country Songs”; three selec- tions by Norman Dello Joio, “A Jubilant Song,” “A Fable” and “Of Crows and Clusters”; and Howard Hanson’s “Psalm 150.” More information and tickets are available at The Rookery FA L L 2 0 1 7 OE3-Insider-eV5-e.indd 23 SOUNDS OF CELEBRATION | 23 | ESCAPES 9/29/17 3:22 PM
