MILESTONE Anthem of an Era THE BEATLES’ “SGT. PEPPER’S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND” ALBUM STANDS THE TEST OF TIME. BY NICK ESQUER It’s been 50 years since John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr—bet- ter known collectively as The Beatles—debuted their iconoclastic album, “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.” For fans of their more tra- ditional pop music output, it was a plot twist in the band’s history. For those at the forefront of cultural and social change, the record became an anthem. Now, in commemoration of the album’s OE3-Mile-eV5-e.indd 20 FA L L 2 0 1 7 | 20 | half-century anniversary, multiple special editions are being released featuring new takes on classic songs like “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.” The original record is a work of musical art that came from an unexpected place. Following a world tour in 1966, the band was looking for some artis- tic inspiration in preparation for their next step.
