There is much discussion amongst clinical educators about how to increase
awareness within Education Departments of healthcare organizations for staff
with physical limitations. Particularly about whether or not they are capable
of practicing excellent patient care or can perform every skills required using
the techniques that are typically used. These same educators generally express
concerns about how to best support staff and students with physical limitations
to meet the competencies of their work settings (Ashcroft & Lutfiyya, 2013).
An added concern is that the nursing workforce
is aging and will continue to do so. According
to Neal-Boylan, Marks, and McCulloch in the
American Journal of Nursing (2015), older
workers are more likely to have chronic
health conditions and disabilities. Employers
and educators will need to provide those with
disabilities reasonable accommodations, as
stipulated by the Americans with Disabilities
Act of 2008. In doing so, educators must
be open to alternative ways of performing
traditional patient care skills such as cardiac
pulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
