Prodesse Quam Conspici: Latin Enthusiasts Welcome!

Dr. McCoskey, Miami University

The seal of Miami University professes one of its core principles: prodesse quam conspici ("to be of service rather than to be conspicuous"), a motto that signals well the university's enthusiasm for welcoming motivated students of Latin and the ancient world to its campus.

The Department of Classics at Miami provides a vibrant space for students of all backgrounds to deepen their encounter with the classical world; our curriculum includes courses in art, archaeology, language, literature, religion, social history, and the classical tradition. Faculty in the department are all research active with interests ranging from the development of agriculture in the ancient Near East to the presence of classical tropes in modern Russian literature, from the meaning of race in the Greek and Roman worlds to the role of Roman harbors in conveying imperial ideology.

The Department of Classics places study of ancient Greek and Latin at the center of its educational mission with instruction at all levels in both languages. In recent semesters, our upper-level Latin students have studied the comedies of Terence, Livy's historical writing, and Latin love elegy. We also offer a range of theme-based seminars, such as "Ancient Religions," "Egyptian Art and Archaeology," "Women In Antiquity," "Justice and Law in Antiquity," and "Ancient Greek and Roman Cities." Many of our courses highlight the continuing influence of the classical world today, examining fields as diverse as modern film and contemporary medicine.

Our students are strongly encouraged to pursue independent research and to study abroad during their time at Miami. We offer a range of off-campus experiences that includes short study programs in Greece and summer

field excavation opportunities.

If you would like to know more about the Department of Classics at Miami or to visit Miami's campus, please get in touch! We would be very happy to arrange for prospective students to meet current Classics students or sit in on some of our classes. We also offer visiting lectures on a number of different themes and topics as part of our outreach program for local Latin teachers. Please contact us for more information: [email protected].
