Why Latin?

Julia Cardinal, McAuley

In all honesty, I could go on forever, but I've decided to shorten my spiel. Latin is not only important to learn because it boosts ACT and SAT scores, but also because Latin provides opportunities unmatched by other languages. Yes, Latin students improve their English vocabulary with newfound knowledge in derivatives. Yes, Latin students find English grammar to make more sense after translating senteces out of Latin. Latin students also pick up Romance Languages more easily. Latin students unlock information about the ancient world that so much of today is based upon. Those allusions in your book in English class? You'll understand them through your studies of mythology and ancient history. Those literary devices you need to know for the English exam? Latin authors like Vergil and Caesar have your back! Those weird terms in anatomy that no one else understands? Latin vocabulary is there to save the day! Latin students have a huge support system in the Junior Classical League. The JCL helps students grow in much more than their studies of the ancient Mediterranean. With leadership, academic, service, social, and so many more opportunities, Latin and the JCL enrich your total growth!

Happenings at Sycamore High

Andrew Phillips, Sycamore

It's Fall, school has started, and it's once again time for Latin Club at Sycamore. However, this year marked some changes in operation. With the retirement of our greatly beloved Magister, Mark Torlone, our Latin Club was left wondering what direction we should take our club next. This year, we held officer elections for the first time in years. We also added more parties based around Roman holidays with a planned Saturnalia party. Most importantly, we are pushing for people to join the JCL, given that we had the least number of delegates last year. This is going to be an exciting year for Sycamore Latin, and I hope that we can continue to reach even greater heights in the years to come.
