Step 1: Acquire Latin Club

Please.

Step 2: Appoint a Service Coordinator

If you have a Latin Club, you should make sure that there is either a person or a small group of people in charge of service events. For some clubs, this role may be delegated to a Vice President or a Service Coordinator position on a local club executive board.

Local club executive board, you ask? I definitely recommend setting one up! Talk to our Parliamentarian for more information and help with that. Having people who can assume different roles will help facilitate not only service events, but many others as well.

The Beginner's Guide to Service

2nd VP Joseph Delamerced

The Ohio Junior Classical League champions community service. Not only is it charitable and beneficial work, but the work done is enjoyable with friends. The OJCL sponsors several service events throughout the year, but local clubs are capable of helping out even more. Service events can seem daunting and difficult to plan, but fear not! The following is a step by step plan for your Latin Club to have a successful and fun year filled with service events!

3.

Attend an OJCL service event

The best way to find out what you like about service events and how to plan them is to attend one of the OJCL-sponsored service events. One major service event that is coming up in all three regions (North, Central, and South) is Make-A-Difference Day. If you attend, talk to the Gubernators about successful planning for a service event. They'll be more than happy to help you out. If you can't attend, I'll tell you the major key to success right now: early planning. Service events take time to plan, and you should try to schedule a service event at least a month in advance.

4.

Find a Service Event

This is the hardest step. Every other step is easy except this one. Think small-scale for your service event. There are volunteering opportunities everywhere, but you will need to talk to people. Contact food banks, disaster relief organizations, and even retirement homes. Volunteers are always welcome in these types of organizations. If you're still having trouble finding service events, then I highly recommend Volunteer Match, which not only shows service organizations in your area, but also individual volunteer

opportunities that your club can attend.

5.

Spread the News

Before you inform people about a service event, calmly tell yourself: not everyone can attend the event. That's OK--even if you have a few people come, you should start having a schedule for service events. The more service events there are, the more opportunities there are for people to attend them. Tell your Latin teachers to tell their students to attend the events. Offer an incentive liked baked goods. Make a quick announcement about a volunteer opportunity. Post about it on social media (shoutout to @scdlatin, @wyojcl, and @wellylatinclub for their sick Instagram accounts).

6.

Sleep Happily

Because you, my friend, have just planned a service event for your Latin Club. And you know what's even cooler? People will actually go to it.
