The Delano Community Band is open to area youth and adult musicians of all experience levels. Its goal is to provide a recreational, social, educational, and musical outlet for its members. The band rehearses 7-8:30 p.m. each Tuesday in the Delano High School band room. Amy Johnson is the project director. Eric Stewart is the conductor. Mission: To provide musical growth, development, and performance opportunities for amateur instrumentalists and bring musical enrichment to Delano and surrounding communities Goals: • To promote the value of music in education and in the community • To offer the opportunity for area musicians to perform and maintain their valuable skills • To provide musical encouragement and performance opportunities for musicians to continue developing musical skills and talents by playing in a community band outside of formal educational environments. Planned shows for 2018 (exact dates to be determined): spring concert at Delano United Methodist Church; summer concert in the park, to coincide with Delano’s 4th of July festival; Memorial Day and Veterans day performances; Christmas/holiday concert, to coincide with the annual Old- Fashioned Christmas celebration. Delano Cub Scout Pack 273 The Delano Cub Scout Pack 273 was founded in 1930. Cub Scouts is for children in kindergarten through fifth grade. The purpose of the organization is to provide an educational program for children to build their quality of character, to train in the responsibilities of participating as a citizen, and to develop personal fitness. Personal fitness includes physical, mental, and emotional fitness. There are about 70 scouts and 10 adult leaders in the organization, which usually meets the last Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Church. Individual dens meet separately twice a month as well to work on achievements. Special projects or events include Scouting for Food, Memorial Day parade, Fourth of July parade, youth overnight camping, Pinewood Derby Races, day camps, Blue and Gold Banquet, and Crow River Clean-up. Each year in September there is a special signup night for youth interested in joining the Scouting program, known as School Night for Scouting, or they can join Scouts at any time throughout the year. Delano Ducks Unlimited Ducks Unlimited (DU) is the world’s leader in wetlands and waterfowl conservation. DU got its start in 1937 during the Dust Bowl when North America’s drought-plagued waterfowl populations had plunged to unprecedented lows. Determined not to sit idly by as the continent’s waterfowl dwindled beyond recovery, a small group of sportsmen joined together to form an organization that became known as Ducks Unlimited. Its mission: habitat conservation. The local chapter hosts a banquet each fall. Delano Fourth of July Committee, Inc. The purpose of the Delano Fourth of July Celebration Committee, Inc. is to organize Minnesota’s oldest and largest Fourth of July celebration, which is recognizing its 162nd celebration in 2018. The celebration is planned by a planning committee, with 30 organizations represented, that meets in February, April, and June; and an eight-member board that meets twice a month from January to July, and once a month the remainder of the year. The event features the parade, baseball tournaments, men’s and women’s softball tournaments, bands for both young and old under the big top (never a cover charge), a family entertainment stage, kiddie parade, childrens’ tractor pull, carnival, fireworks, and much more. Delano-Franklin Township Area Historical Society Established in 1999 to preserve the area’s rich history and educate the public, the Delano/Franklin Township Area Historical Society currently has 30 members which meet the last Monday of every month at 7 p.m. at the Delano Heritage Center (old library). The society also sponsors an event the first Saturday of each month at 10 a.m. at the Heritage Center or at Delano City Hall. These events are presentations on historic areas, buildings, organizations, or traditional skills. They are open to anyone interested in history. Individuals may donate items to the museum and/or use the resources to learn about the history in the Delano area, or discover and work on their own family history. It is open May through October, Wednesdays, from 2 to 6 p.m. The Delano Farmers Market allows local farmers to bring the freshest, locally-grown produce and other products. One may find fresh produce, breads, fruits, jams, honey, homemade pies, maple syrup, eggs, beef and chicken products, fresh salsa, fresh flowers, and handcrafted items.
