James Marsh, from a script by
Mindhunter’s Joe Penhall (who also
wrote the screenplays for The Road and Enduring
Love), King of Thieves recreates the real-life
Hatton Garden ‘heist’, which, in April 2015, saw
a gang of elderly men attempt to pull off the
“largest burglary in English legal history”. Their
target? A high security vault with around £200
million worth of cash and jewels inside. (Now
that’s what we call a retirement fund!)
Boasting an all-star line-up that reads like
a who’s who of veteran British talent including
Charlie Cox, Paul Whitehouse, Jim Broadbent,
Ray Winstone and the legendary Sir Michael
Caine (channelling his Italian Job alter-ego,
Charlie Croker), this riveting drama is a faithful
yet highly entertaining retelling of those
astonishing events, with typically superb and
very funny performances from the flawless cast.
A word to the wise. While knowing how it
ends definitely won’t spoil your enjoyment,
don’t Google the aftermath if you’re lucky
enough to be in the dark about the outcome
(it really was headline news around the world).
It’s more fun to go in criminally unaware.
