Oscar-winning director Damien Chazelle ( Whiplash ) reteams with his La La Land leading man Ryan Gosling for this fascinating biographical drama .
Based on the best-selling book by James R . Hansen , it sees the 37-year-old actor playing Neil Armstrong – better known , of course , as the first man to walk on the Moon . Fuelled by another sensational performance from Gosling ( if there ’ s a better actor under 40 working in Hollywood today , we can ’ t think of them ), First Man explores the sacrifices the now-iconic astronaut made in the run-up to his date with destiny , most notably those involving his beloved wife Janet ( The Crown ’ s Claire Foy – absolutely superb ). It also addresses the enormous national pressure on Armstrong and his team ’ s shoulders ; the Cold War was at its most chilly in 1969 , with America desperate to best its great adversary Russia in the space race ( after countless costly setbacks ). Thrilling and action-packed , yet also thoughtful and romantic , this wonderful film could see Gosling finally securing that elusive acting Oscar ( and potentially Foy too ), while Chazelle should also add to his collection .
It ’ s no exaggeration to say that First Man is a giant leap for cinema . It ’ s brilliant .
After cleverly avoiding Thanos in Infinity War , Ant-Man has made it to Watch his own the sequel trailer
