Six Tom Cruise stunts so jaw-dropping they defy the laws of physics as we know them... Upholding a career tradition, Cruise does many of his own stunts in Mission: Impossible – Fallout including performing corkscrew turns in a helicopter. Tom (being Tom) learned to fly the chopper especially for the film – and in record time, too. What a guy! In Mission: Impossible 2, Cruise’s character Ethan Hunt free-climbs Utah’s infamous Dead Horse Point, which is basically just a 2,000 ft vertical cliff. The Cruiser did this for real – without a safety net we might add – tearing a shoulder muscle in the process. Ouch. Our third entry sees Tom scaling the heights once more, this time taking on the world’s tallest building in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. That’s really him dangling 1,700 ft up in the air, with only a few safety wires for company. We’re dizzy just thinking about it. How long can you hold your breath? Maybe two minutes, at a push? In Rogue Nation, Cruise was required to hold his breath for three minutes in order to hack an underwater safe. Easy peasy for Tom who, following military training, can actually go six minutes without air. Show off. Fallout again, this time a dramatic chase sequence involving Hunt and August Walker. In hot pursuit, Cruise attempts a colossal leap, breaking his ankle, for real, in the process. In true Tom style, he was still able to complete the take – although filming had to be suspended for seven weeks. Our final entry isn’t an M:I movie. In fact, Cruise isn’t even the one carrying out the stunt. Instead he’s the passenger as Emily Blunt takes a hard right in Edge of Tomorrow – and we mean hard. “I almost killed Tom Cruise,” the actress confesses. We can see now why Tom likes to do it his way! odeon.co.uk 23
