Nothing like a Dame!
British treasure Maggie Smith is all smiles after her 2000 BAFTA win
t is a truth universally
acknowledged,
that the best thing
about Downton Abbey has
always been, and will always
be, Dame Maggie Smith as
the Dowager Countess of
Grantham, Violet Crawley.
In honour of the voracious
Violet’s return this September
in the Downton Abbey movie,
we thought we’d share this
wonderful picture of the great
Dame being honoured. This
particular gong, a BAFTA,
was awarded to Smith at the
ODEON Leicester Square
in the year 2000 for her best
supporting turn in 1999’s
Tea with Mussolini. It is just
one of 46 awards the actress
has won over the course of
a seven-decade career. Like
Violet, we’re not sure Smith
knows what a weekend is...
See Downton Abbey in cinemas
from Friday 13 September
