Spice Girls Buried past And speaking of scum, they don’t come much nastier than the Skrull: a murderous, shape- shifting intergalactic mob whose goblin-faced leader Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) fancies Planet Earth as his plaything. Fortunately, he hasn’t figured on a young Nick Fury (played by a digitally de-aged Samuel L. Jackson), with the future S.H.I.E.L.D. director trying to convince Captain Marvel to rally the troops and join an epic fight that predates the formation of the Avengers. Has there been a TV sensation like it since? Not one with such broad appeal, surely. By now, you should know that the folks at Marvel are incapable of making a bad movie – and Captain Marvel is yet another slam-dunk for the studio with the midas touch. Featuring a heroine who’ll make you think and feel, and an all-star cast that also takes in big-hitters like Jude Law, Annette Bening and Gemma Chan, directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck will take you on a rollercoaster ride that pings between eye-popping aerial battles, heart-in-mouth scraps aboard subway trains and emotional set-pieces that will leave you shaken and stirred. As Brie Larson herself put it during the film’s production: “Fans should get excited. I’m really proud of what it is that we’re making, and I think that all of the hype and all of the anticipation will be worth it.” In the 90s, this all-conquering female four- piece were what we really, really wanted.
