Feeling Fit Like Brushing Your Teeth Getting into the Fitness Habit Is it really fair that some people seem to LOVE to work out? How can they be so driven and motivated, while you simply dread the experience? Maybe you used to be that person back in the day, yet today it’s like pulling teeth to get to the gym. Worse yet, once you've fallen off the fitness bandwagon, it can be downright tough to climb back on! Sarah Ingmanson Battaglia, owner of Star’s Locker fitness studios, talks about making exercise a habit while getting back the fitness mojo you need to feel happy and healthy. Why is it so hard for people to stick to a fitness routine? Most people motivate their fitness through some combination of fear, investment, goal, guilt, vanity or coercion. The problem is, all of these factors can ebb and flow, be elimi- nated or rationalized away. What’s far more successful is when your fitness routine becomes as routine as brushing your teeth. Think about it - you don't spend a lot of time, money, or energy deciding when, whether, or how you're going to brush your teeth in any given day, right? You just get it done. When you treat your workouts like brushing your teeth, they become non-negotiable and find a way into your day. Then once you get to the habitual level of "brushing your teeth" with your fitness, your energy is fun- neled toward doing the workout, rather than motivating the workout! Which strategies do you recommend for someone feeling unmotivated or uninspired? Before you "do" anything, I recommend a little soul searching to reflect upon your current resistance. For example, did you have a bad experience with fitness or a particular gym in the past? Beyond the discomfort associated with trying something new, are you self con- scious about fitting in? The "fit" in fitness is as important as the "fit" you seek out with your place of employment, education, doctor, dentist, hair stylist, friends, and so forth. You should treat it the same way when evaluating your next fitness home. Next, you need to think about what's different now and make the necessary changes in mindset or strat- egy to stay in the game. It helps to step back and look at the bigger picture of fitness with your life, lifestyle, life aspirations, and overall health. Ignoring the issue is not going to make fitness easier at a later date; it will absolutely be harder the longer you wait.
