Food for Thought by Todd White

Food. It’s more than just a meal these days. It’s an occasion; a reason for social gatherings. We build relationships around the table, close business deals, meet new friends, experience the world through new flavors, and seek comfort in classic dishes. It is truly a part of the fabric of our culture and of other cultures around the world.

My name is Todd White, and like many of you, I love to eat, drink, and explore new restaurants and cuisine. Some of you may know me from my fashion and commercial photography or my role as producer and photographer for the Daytripper on PBS, but I also have a love of food. I’ve had some of the freshest seafood and wines in the cafés of Lisbon, enjoyed Injira in Dire Dawa, Ethiopia, drank some of the finest coffee in Harrar, walked the streets of India eating some amazing food from the local street vendors, indulged in Koushari in Cairo and enjoyed a pint or two of my favorite beers from Real Ale, 512 and Rentsch breweries here in Texas.

I am looking forward to taking you along on some of my culinary adventures. I will be writing a monthly article in Occhio Appello featuring locations around Austin and surrounding areas. No place is off limits (well large chain restaurants are off limits). We’ll explore restaurants - the dives and 5-star spots, breweries, wineries, local farms, food trucks, specialty bakeries, and spots known for deserts. You’ll hear the stories about the locations, meet the chefs, hear their personal stories and inspirations, and the stories behind the food that is served.

It seems like weekly there are new places to eat, current restaurants changing up their menu, new chefs popping up, and a new twist on a classic dish. Let’s discover these together. Feel free to send suggestions and topics you’d like to have me cover. Send an email to [email protected].

The first review will be in the June issue. Until then, I encourage you to try a new restaurant or cuisine, and step outside of your comfort zone. There’s a world of flavors out there waiting to be discovered. Bon Appétit!
