My fiancée and I still reminisce about the El Mundo Tapas days and the lasting taste legacy this little Edge Hill gem left in our lives . We would order our food on the little blackboards , eat our weights worth in Chilli Relleno ’ s and sip Sangria while we gazed satisfyingly out over bitumen carpark ... Ahhh the memories ! Indeed , El Mundo Tapas holds a place in the hearts of many a Cairns local .
What started out as a tiny suburban restaurant with just a few tables inside , turned into one of the hottest seats in town . As its popularity grew , so too did the tables soon out the front door and stretch along the sidewalk until they simply exhausted all space . It was a sad day indeed when this much loved Cairns restaurant closed its doors in December 2012 .
Owners Mark and Carlie had dreams of travelling the world , and as the El Mundo doors shut that final time , they clutched passports in their hot little hands and set about an epic adventure . And travel the world they did , recently returning refreshed and rejuvenated after 4 1 / 2 years abroad , now with three-year-old son Levi in tow .
Despite their love for the hospitality world they knew they wouldn ’ t be able to go back to restaurant life . It ’ s a well known fact that the fast paced restaurant world isn ’ t particularly conducive to family life or parenthood yet they still wanted to continue with their love of food and cooking in the Far North . That is where El Mundo At Home was born .
Both Mark and Carlie know the struggles that come with a busy lifestyle . One of the first things to take a back seat when life gets in the way is the ability to create healthy and nutritious food for yourself and your family – this is where El Mundo At Home comes in . Using the abundance of fresh and local produce we have available in Cairns have begun creating ready to eat meals that you can enjoy at home . Cooked fresh every week El Mundo At Home ’ s ready-made meals are inspired by global cuisine and culinary destinations visited by Mark and Carlie during their overseas adventures . Think Moroccan Goat Tagine , French Cassoulet , Spanish Albondiga Meatballs and Mexican Chipotle Chicken Soup .
El Mundo means ‘ the world ’ in Spanish and while us locals might not have the means to travel to Peru for a Seafood Chowder or Indonesia for a spicy Beef Rendang , we can still sample the tastes and flavours of dishes from all over the world in the comfort of our own house with El Mundo At Home .
Visit www . elmundoathome . com to order your El Mundo At Home meals and search for stockists or you can find them at Rusty ’ s Markets on Friday and Saturday every week .
