It ’ s the festive time of year again ! I ’ m sure it comes around faster every time !
So while we look at a Christmas card and see the snow settling on the ground , in Cairns we have a very special , balmy , tropical Christmas . There are some fab outdoor events coming up and some cool air conditioning to be enjoyed in the galleries .
CAIRNS ART GALLERY
With the school holidays upon us there are plenty of kid ’ s workshops to be enjoyed throughout the holidays both before and after Christmas , including a special art trip to the brand new Cairns Aquarium .
Exhibiting for the whole of December and January is ARTNOW FNQ . A biennial initiative of the Gallery that aims to explore and reflect the inspiring range of activities that drive contemporary art and creative practice in Far North Queensland . In broad terms , it brings together works by emerging and established Indigenous and non-Indigenous
artists in a dialogue about ideas relating to nature , place , environments , identity , politics and history . Drop the kids into a workshop and take a bit of time to look around .
On December 1st , check out Eggplant & Poppy ’ s Christmas shopping event in Oceana Walk Arcade , then wander on through to the Cairns Regional Gallery for the opening of ARTNOW FNQ . Then carry onto the Esplanade Lagoon as the Christmas tree lights are switched on . You never know , you might have all your shopping done and helped local business in our community to keep on thriving !
On December 12th , head down to the Esplanade for a fun filled evening . Starting with the fabulous local talent from The Young Company Theatre group , and followed by a screening of Polar Express , the beautifully animated modern family classic , the evening will commence at 5pm . Information can be found on Council website . Bring a picnic , family and friends . It ’ s FREE !
MUNRO MARTIN PARKLANDS
’ Twas the night before Christmas . This Christmas Panto will be showcasing a range of local talent from our very own arts community . From actors , singers , designers and artists creating sets and costumes , this is a wonderful family event on the December 16th starting at 7pm .
From the same company that brought us last year ’ s ‘ A Cairns Christmas Carol ’, Box Jelly Theatre Co , and choral work by Cairns Young Voices , join us for an enchanting festive treat for anyone who believes in the joy of Christmas . So get your family , friends and a picnic together and experience a tropical Christmas under the starry night sky .
