NYU Black Renaissance Noire Spring 2015 - Page 105

5TH GRADE POETRY PERFORMANCE - BRONX, NY Their classmates dropped one by one, faster than flies. The stage, like the walk home and its glass-strewn lots, glowing like kryptonite no matter how much I told them their poems had superpowers until there were four. Four little girls — mini gum-popping divas all semester long, confident as Janay Rice or Mom before the first knockout, now cried and balked and slowly walked the bright plank anyway to face the cool, expectant darkness. Dreaming of ice cream and terrified of how their wet, new words would be held by others, they still did what needed to be done. They shined like Dymond, Rekia, Hadiya and Precious Doe no longer can. 103 BLACK RENAISSANCE NOIRE Four little girls — not Denise, Addie Mae, Cynthia or Carole but daughters of fortune this time, blew up their fears and chose to speak, bowing into blasts of applause.
