When the coal mines were on strike , my father sought work at the local Parson ’ s sawmill where huge Southern Pine logs were sawed into slabs of usable lumber for the construction trades . The smell of fresh sawed pine and the oozing , sticky resin is an enduring memory . Have any of you seen a raw , loose bale of cotton , before it ’ s cleaned and compressed into a stackable bale ? It is a dirty , grayish , stinky white mass with all sorts of debris entangled in a massive fractal mountain .
