didn’t flash his teeth for crowds,
didn’t have to shuffle, didn’t have to squat.
Did sow, yes. All these zinnias sprouting up in backyards
in Geneva, Sydney, Paris, Cologne, and Florence —
these flowers — works of his hands.

The veins in his hands, still mighty, ninety-five-year-old roots.
His fingers, curled like a puppeteer’s,
prompted us to flourish like South Africa’s Motlatse Canyon.
