Taste the Local Difference® as an
initiative of the Michigan Land Use
Institute dates back to a series of
conversations with community partners in 2002. On the heels of those
conversations, MLUI created the
very first food and farming guide for
northwest Michigan in 2004, under
the banner of “Select Traverse City.”
In 2005, the name Taste the Local
Difference was born. Ten years later,
the TLD brand is flourishing with a
new focus incorporating the vision
of the Northwest Michigan Food
