Harvest management
Straight cutting canola is not a new concept, but the adoption
rate is increasing in Western Canada. Much of the change
in this harvest practice can be attributed to the efforts
of Western Canadian canola breeders and their success
in developing canola hybrids suited for straight combining.
The advantages of straight cutting this valuable, shatter-
prone crop are multiple and add up to a yield increase and
cost savings. Benefits include flexibility of harvest timing,
maximum pod fill and higher quality due to plants standing
longer, and less passes across the field.
