When I was 20 , I found out I was pregnant and knew I couldn’t do this on my own. My Nurse-Family Partnership nurse, Samara, came to my house, sat on my couch and started filling me with knowledge. I was blown away by the support I received on the first visit and with each visit I became more confident. Samara kept me focused during this transition of my life.

When my daughter was 3 months old, Samara asked me “What’s next?” I had just graduated from college, was working, taking care of my daughter and getting into the swing of things. Thanks to a simple 2-word question and Samara’s support finding resources, I now have a Master in Public Administration degree.

I want to ensure that every eligible mom and baby can access the services of a NFP nurse. I now have a platform to make the voices of our families heard to increase the chances of other moms and babies being able to break the cycle of intergenerational poverty and provide hope to create a better future for themselves.

I was homeless and living in a methadone treatment facility when I found out I was 8 weeks pregnant. I was scared about my ability to care for a child given my circumstances and lack of support. A mom at the facility told me about Nurse-Family Partnership. Having my nurse, Abby, was a lifeline. It was invaluable to have someone teach me the facts and answer questions accurately, comfortably, without judgment. “It’s like asking a friend, but you knew you’d get the right info.”

As a NFP mom and recovering addict, I met many who needed the support of a nurse so I was already doing informal outreach. It’s a dream that this is now my job. Giving back to my community, giving back what was given to me fills my heart. The best part of my job so far is connecting with moms and being able to tell them that I’m an NFP grad as it deepens the comfort level. They know it’s ok to open up about the distress they’re experiencing. I can relate and let them know I will be their point person until they’re enrolled.
