Editorial Contents Welcome to the 27th Edition of the Nura Gili News! The mid-year break is fast approaching and 2016 has already proved itself to be a huge year for both students and staff of Nura Gili. Editorial 3 Meet the Editors In this edition of the Nura Gili News, we farewell the Director of Nura Gili, Professor Martin Nakata, as he takes on his new position at James Cook University in Townsville. UNSW Indigenous Society Update 4 Farewell to Professor Nakata 6 The UNSW Indigenous Society have had an exciting month, with the ‘Banner Drop’ and ‘Speak Out’. During April, Nura Gili also hosted a Sponsors Event to thank all of our generous donors. UNSW and Nura Gili Alumni, Teela Reid, had the oppurtunity to both visit and speak in Parliament at the ‘NSW Parliamentary Friends of Reconciliation Launch’. April also saw both Grant Maling and Ryan Ahearne compete in the NSW State Netball Men’s and Mixed Championships. Samara Hand has recently participated in the Aurora Indigenous Scholars Study Tour to leading universities in both the US and the UK and is encouraging more UNSW students to apply. I am a Yuin and Kamilaroi woman, from a small town on the South Coast called Bega and I also have Tongan heritage on my father’s side of the family. Where are you from/nation? I am a Wiradjuri woman from Wellington, NSW. What are you studying? I’m in my 3rd and final year of a Bachelor of Media (PR & Advertising). What are you studying? I’m in my final semester of a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Media, Culture and Technology and minoring in Indigenous Studies. What do you want to do once you graduate? I want to take a break and travel, but I am What do you want to do once you graduate? thinking about coming back for postgrad studies.
