he medical school will be the first school in the nation to offer a course in
the art of communication and empathy. The curriculum will be led by Dr.
Evonne Kaplan-Liss, M.D., assistant dean of narrative reflection and patient
communication at the TCU and UNTHSC School of Medicine.
“Practicing good medicine is extremely important, to be sure, but what can
make or break a patient’s experience, and ultimately affects the outcome
of their health, is the way a physician communicates and empathizes with
them,” Dr. Kaplan-Liss pointed out at a recent conference.
ot only will the new school of medicine address Texas’ growing physician
needs, but also will provide new opportunities for employment and
economic growth for the region. On the average, a medical school in the U.S.
produces $1.7 billion of annual economic impact.
Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price echoed the importance
of this project’s reflection on her city. “Beyond the
economic impact, I’m thrilled to see how this new school
will further the city’s image as a world class higher
education hub that will draw more medical professionals
and their families to Fort Worth,” she said.
