The healthcare industry in North Texas is
big. Really big. Healthcare makes up 15
percent of the entire North Texas economy
and is growing by the minute, adding 5,400 related jobs
to the region’s economy annually.
With seemingly unlimited options in healthcare providers
spread out all across the region, people facing mobility
challenges can struggle at times to geographically
connect the dots. Thanks to innovative thinking by DART
(Dallas Area Regional Transit), MUTD (McKinney Urban
Transit District), DCTA (Denton County Transportation

Authority), and several municipalities and transportation
partners, qualifying residents in Collin County no longer
face transportation barriers.
Since its launch in 2016, Collin County Rides has served
people 65 years of age or older and/or people living
with a disability in participating DART cities of Allen,
Fairview and Wylie. This subsidized taxi service provides
an efficient transit option for a fraction of the usual
cost. Participants can store $5 to $50 on a DART debit
card and receive a taxi subsidy based on how much they
contribute toward their own transportation. Riders who
have regularly scheduled medical appointments may
also be eligible for subscription service, which
eliminates the need to call and schedule each individual

Earlier this year, MUTD and DCTA announced a similar
subsidized taxi voucher program called Collin County
Transit. Low-income residents in participating cities
including McKinney, Lowry Crossing, Melissa, Princeton
and Celina, now enjoy the convenience of regular taxi
service at a fraction of the cost to get to destinations
such as medical facilities, grocery stores, senior centers
