Diverse health care programs, strong
economy bring international talent
to North Texas
W
hile North Texas – the fastest growing
region in the U.S. – continually attracts
business leaders from around the world,
the same is true with the region’s health care industry. With
400,000 employees and more than 90 hospitals, North Texas is a major player in patient care with many specialties
attracting top talent – and patients – to the region.
In 2004, Dr. Rashmin Savani was recruited to visit North Texas to build
a program in neonatal-perinatal medicine that encompassed the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Parkland Hospital and
Children’s Medical Center of Dallas.
The collaborative spirit of these three medical institutions in Dallas’ medical district impressed the physician, and for that reason alone
Savani relocated to the region where he currently serves as the division
director of neonatal-perinatal medicine and associate division director
of pulmonary and vascular biology in the pediatrics department at UT
Southwestern; chief of pediatrics at Parkland Health and Hospital System; and division director of neonatal-perinatal medicine at Children’s
Medical Center of Dallas.
Since his arrival, Savani has been able to recruit physicians to his
team from across the U.S., going from nine neonatologists to 24. In

addition his team opened a new state-of-the-art NICU at Children’s
Medical Center, which was ranked in the top 30 children’s hospital
NICUs by U.S. News and World Report within three years of opening.
Children’s Medical Center is private, not-for-profit and is the seventh
largest pediatric health care provider in the nation.
“North Texas is an ideal location to attract the best talent nationally and internationally in all sectors of the economy, but in medicine
in particular,” Savani said. “The region boasts UT Southwestern, one
of the top university medical centers in the country with five Nobel
Laureates, 19 members of the National Academy of Sciences and 18
members of the Institute of Medicine. Together with Children’s Medical Center, a nationally recognized children’s hospital and home of the
excellence in pediatric care, a full spectrum of state-of-the-art care for
infants and children is available.”
