Feature Story DFW Airport Zone No. 39 that brought new freight carriers to DFW Airport. By 1979, DFW Airport became the seventh-largest international hub in the country. This activity prompted the U.S. Travel Service to officially award DFW Airport its “gateway status.” This acknowledgement allowed the U.S. government to promote the airport in foreign countries, which helped it secure additional carriers and direct flights to and from places like Tokyo, Bangkok and Frankfurt. The airport and its operations continued to expand throughout the 1980s and 90s. In 1995, DFW Airport offered services to 33 international destinations, and in air cargo, the airport enjoyed status as an international hub, with nearly two-thirds of all Texas freight passing through the airport.
