Bowie State University
Founded in 1865 , Bowie State is the oldest historically black college / university in Maryland and one of the ten oldest in the country . It is a comprehensive university offering more than 5,400 students a rigorous academic curriculum leading to undergraduate , master and doctoral degrees . The university is committed to increasing educational opportunities for students who may be the first in their families to attend college and to building a culturally diverse student body that energizes the campus community . The Economist recently ranked the university as the best value school among Maryland colleges .
Through the university ’ s first signature program , Education Innovation Initiative ( EI 2 ), students use next-generation technology to develop solutions for realworld challenges for corporate and government clients . Working with faculty and industry experts , the students tackle problems like creating communication tools for first responders and completing a cybersecurity audit for a government agency .
Bowie State ’ s award-winning academic programs prepare students for the careers of the future . The university ’ s cybersecurity programs are recognized as a National Center for Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education by the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security . Expanding research programs in the biosciences provide opportunities for students to work at the forefront of innovation , creating biomedicines , extracting and synthesizing DNA , producing genetically modified materials and much more . Students majoring in bioinformatics learn to incorporate the application of technology to explore biological questions .
