The school has traditionally placed strong emphasis on the arts and sciences at the undergraduate level and on the preparation of students for advanced study . An above-average percentage of Morgan graduates enter graduate and professional school . Historically , the University has ranked among the top public campuses nationally in the number of African American graduates receiving doctorates .
As Maryland ’ s premier public urban research institution , Morgan is very proud of its diversity , attracting students from every state in the U . S . and many foreign countries . It is a true global university with many of its students coming from countries such as Nepal , Brazil , Nigeria , Kuwait , and Saudi Arabia . The University has consistently ranked among the best for African Americans , Hispanics , women , and veterans . Morgan ranks among Forbes ’ top colleges each year .
Two of Morgan ’ s strategic goals are to enhance the University ’ s status as a doctoral research university and to grow its resources including the research infrastructure . The goal is to increase its research awards and contracts to $ 50M by 2020 . An important way to grow Morgan ’ s resources is to improve the ability for technology transfer and commercialization of the faculty ’ s intellectual property .
One example of a contract award to Morgan State University is from the U . S . Army , which recently awarded the University the first phase ( 16 months ) of a 36-month project titled , “ Decision Engine for Unstructured and Structured Data ”. This project is funded by the Test Resource Management Center ( TRMC ) Test and Evaluation / Science & Technology ( T & E / S & T ) Program through the U . S . Army Program Executive Office for Simulation , Training and Instrumentation ( PEO STRI ). The goal of the project is to develop and demonstrate a decision engine for structured and unstructured data that addresses the following needs of the U . S . Army T & E community : 1 ) the lack of tools to efficiently filter , process , store , analyze , and retrieve vast amounts of data and 2 ) the limitations of existing computational software tools to extract meaningful patterns and trends from structured and unstructured data to facilitate critical decision-making . Dr . Kofi Nyarko , associate professor of electrical and computer engineering and Director of the Engineering Visualization Research Laboratory , is the principal investigator .
Morgan embraces its past but looks forward to a bright future . With its campus designated “ A National Treasure ” by the National Trust for Historic Preservation , the University is determined to continue its excellence in teaching , intensive research and effective public service and community engagement by living up to its motto : Growing the future , leading the world .
