Bikers pedal to help kids ’ cancer

SOME members of the ADF donned uniforms of a very different nature recently when they participated in the annual Townsville to Cairns Bike Ride . MAJ Amanda Gibbs , SGT Kirsty Reason and civvy Nicky Bobin tackled the ride as a team . Travelling in support of the team was WO1 Nicky Rothwell . WO1 Tony Venables also spent time in the saddle on the ride . The event is a charity fundraiser in support of the Children ’ s Cancer Institute , a cause every participant is happy to support . There were almost 300 riders in this year ’ s event and they were farewelled by Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill as they left the Mercure Inn . It ’ s not a trip for the faint-hearted - the first challenge is to ride to lunch at the Frosty Mango , about 70kms away . Then , stopping for a maximum of 30 minutes for lunch , the peloton set out to knock over the remaining 40kms to the Ingham Showgrounds . On Day Two , the riders had to get themselves up the range and on to Pease Park at Innisfail , a distance of 152kms . Day Three is , relatively speaking , a breeze with only 94kms left to cover .
