Reliability of the tool used in research data collection, refers to whether or not a
tool actually measures what it sets out to measure, while the validity of a
research data collection tool refers to whether the tool is appropriate, useful, and
meaningful. "A tool cannot be valid, if it is not reliable, but being reliable does not
necessarily make it valid," (Saddler, 2007). An example of this is the daily use of a
scale that reliably adds 5 extra lbs. to your actual weight; the daily weight results
will be reliable, but not valid.
