Vision & Voice
What are some of the fashion
trends for the new year that
we should keep an eye out for?
“The importance of vintage inspiration
continues. There is the re-emergence of
thin metal eye wire styling. Silhouettes
that were once familiar take on a new
contemporary feeling. Statement looks
are key with oversized and exaggerated
profiles for those consumers willing to
embrace these eclectic looks. Look for
hexagonal, geometric and re-imagined
aviator shapes. For those less daring,
there will be plenty of classic, heritage
shapes to choose from. Think rounds,
ovals and the iconic P3.”
Nikki Maglione, senior designer,
Zyloware.
“Cat-eyes are still an important silhouette
that’s holding on strong in the women’s
eyewear market and constantly being
updated with new interpretations.
Mask-style sunglasses with pilot-like
profiles have found new inspirations in
combinations of acetate and metal, as
well as unique lens applications. We’re
also seeing a play on colours, materials
and shapes that are novel, yet timeless,
and definitely ready for today’s
millennial.”
Davide Rettore, CEO,
Marcolin USA Eyewear Corp.
“Rustic & Earthy Naturals describe the
colour palate for 2019 in eyewear, sunwear
and lens tints. That includes organic
greens, spice orange and orchid (mirror
lens colours), translucent, blushes, honey,
horn, cantaloupe, sunny yellow, ocean
blue. Luxurious handmade plastics with
mimicked patterns to look like natural
stone, marble and ceramic formations.
Topped with artisanal finishes using
laser-cut embossing add a customization
to each piece. Retro sports brands like
Champion driving youth to simple and
modern looks of the ‘90s. Today’s updated
retros echo this trend, but are updated
with ultra-thin, oversized rounds, classic
Windsor rims and aviators.”

“The main eyewear trends to look out for in 2019 are
slimmed-down silhouettes, transparent shapes, metal
and shields styles. Slim-downed silhouettes are
defined by a nod to ‘90s and early 2000s micro frames.
Transparent shapes include contemporary silhouettes
with high-shine tones and ethereal, crystal-clear surface
details giving a simple sophistication to the architec-
tural designs. The metal trend will be incorporated in
two ways, lightweight metal with kicks of colour and
combinations of metal layered with rich acetate textures.
Shield styles will make a statement in the new year
with total-lens shapes, reflective surfaces, lenses and
metals and seamless curves.”
