We had no half terms as such , but we did have two or three Leave-out days when one was free to go anywhere and do anything from after breakfast to 9pm . Looking back I am amazed that there was simply no control at all about what people got up to . Nobody asked you where you were going , let alone what you were going to do : you really were free to do as you wished with no questions asked before or after . Since my parents lived in Cornwall , I did all sorts of things – shooting pigeons on a farm belonging to a friend of my parents near Liphook was a favourite . I kept my 12-bore shotgun in its case with
100 cartridges in my toys with no trouble from anybody – imagine that today ! Then I went to Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight on a splendid paddle steamer from Lymington to visit another family friend . And of course I went to London to do exciting things like lunch at Veeraswamy ’ s , who made one feel like a Maharaja , or visit the Windmill theatre to see nearly nude ladies – disappointing I am afraid !
The Winchester Undertakers ran a fleet of four or five vintage Rolls Royces , dating from the 1920s and 1930s . On the final day of term they were turned into a
fleet of luxurious taxis to ferry men from their houses to the station . They were stately black limousines , impeccably kept , but one could get two men in front beside the chauffeur and five in the rear . They were quite expensive ( 5 shillings I think ), but a shilling each from the passengers covered it with a good tip for the longsuffering chauffeur . One ’ s trunk had already departed the previous day by Luggage In Advance , to be delivered by the Great Western Railway to my home in Cornwall a day or two later – cost 2 / 3d . It was a civilized way to start the holidays .
