School spotlight: Tidwell Middle School Tidwell Middle School serves families in the southeastern portion of Northwest ISD, where partnerships between the school and community are encouraged to build a strong student-focused atmosphere. The school is named after Roanoke resident and longtime Northwest ISD board member John Morgan Tidwell. Mr. Tidwell was active in both the town and school district, having graduated from Roanoke High School before Northwest ISD was established. He also had connections to Justin, working at a barbershop there before entering the military for World War II. In addition to his work with Northwest ISD, Mr. Tidwell served as a trustee for the former Roanoke School Board and a councilman for the Roanoke City Council. At Tidwell, students have access to a range of extracurricular opportunities, expanding well beyond athletics and fine arts. Students can take part in Destination Imagination problem- solving, the school newspaper and more. Tidwell is also home 14 to the district’s only school-sponsored radio station, managed by advanced media students. Tidwell is known for its commitment to student engagement, as before- and after-school activities are routinely packed with students eager to learn or take part in school events. n Established 2010 Mascot Titans Colors Blue and Black
