SUMMIT ORTHOPEDICS:
RIGHT-SIZED CARE
“With the growth of Vadnais Heights
and the surrounding communities, the
physician leaders at Summit saw an
opportunity to invest in the community
and develop a destination experience
for orthopedic care, drawing individuals
and families from across the Twin
Cities,” said Adam Berry, CEO, Summit
Orthopedics.
Summit Orthopedics/Vadnais Heights
campus has become a destination
for advanced spine and total joint
procedures – attracting an estimated
74,500 patients from across the metro
area, several states and outside the
country.
A more inventive way of meeting
the needs of today’s patients is what
Summit Orthopedics calls Right-Sized
Care. “Right-Sized Ca re means if a
procedure can be done safely and
effectively in a surgery center, it should
be performed there rather than a
hospital. In the same way, if a procedure
can be done in the clinic setting safely
and effectively, then it should be done
there rather than a surgery center. This
trend seeks to drive down healthcare
costs, and Summit has been quick to
embrace this type of thinking with the
new model for total joint replacement
and advanced spine procedures being
done in a surgery center environment
rather than the hospital,” said Summit
CEO Berry.
Summit Orthopedics’ Vadnais Heights
Surgery Center earned The Joint
Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval®
for Advanced Certification for Total
Hip and Total Knee Replacement. The
facility is one of just two ambulatory
surgery centers nationwide to receive
the certification. The advanced
certification was developed in response
to the growing number of patients
undergoing a total hip or total knee
replacement surgery in the U.S. Also,
there has been an increased focus on
clinical evidence-based patient care as
it relates to pain management, quality
of life issues, functional limitation in
mobility, and the return to normal daily
activities.
For example, since opening in 2014,
the average satisfaction level for
patients undergoing total hip or knee
replacements at Summit’s Vadnais
Heights facility was 96.2 out of 100; the
average infection rate was between just
.1 - .5 percent; and the average time
between surgery and ambulation was
between three hours and 10 minutes
and three hours and 23 minutes, with
patients traveling an average of 95 to
98 feet.
Summit CEO Berry noted, “Patients
want the best care available at the best
price. Through our Vadnais Heights
Surgery Center, Summit provides
this service. And now The Joint
Commission, the leading healthcare
accreditation organization in the
country, has recognized Summit’s
value.”
