Unmanaged overhead today can hurt you dearly as retirement
approaches.
Make a plan and keep it relevant
It is a cliché but, if you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Having goals
and a sound financial plan to attain those goals is critical to
everyone – dentists included.
If you are sacrificing retirement dollars
tomorrow to reduce debt today, you
might be sorry.

You most likely wrote down many goals when you decided to
become a dentist: the desired location for your first practice as
an owner or as an associate, how much you wanted to make, etc.
Don’t stop now that you are deep into your career – especially
if have your own practice. If you don’t have financial goals and
a plan, you are likely to be just treading water for years. Write
down the specific goals you want to achieve when you retire –
and visit them at least annually. They don’t have to be cast in
stone, just make a plan and keep it active and updated.
Don’t fail alone
You know everything about incisors and bicuspids, but are you
as well versed in IRAs and 401(k)s? If not, find a good financial
advisor and/or CPA who is the expert. Yes, hiring these profes-
sionals costs money, but being penny wise and pound foolish
with your money is not only a dangerous game to play today, it
can literally lead to disaster as retirement approaches.
Being a dentist is a profession, an avocation, and a calling.
Along the way, there are many ways you can both take action
now and also plan for the retirement you richly deserve. Avoid
these common mistakes to make it all work on the continuum
of your career.
