The GentleWave ® System (Sonendo, Laguna Hills, CA) delivers a stream of procedure fluid from the tip of the single-use Pro- cedure Instrument. Advanced fluid dynamics, broad spectrum acoustic energy and tissue dissolution chemistry are used to de- bride and disinfect the root canal system. 1, 5 The system simul- taneously cleans each canal from the crown to the apex, removing tissue, debris, biofilm and bacteria deep within lateral canals, microscopic tubules and other areas that are inaccessible with conventional techniques and instrumentation. 5 In Dr. O’Leary’s practice, the GentleWave System can facilitate a single 90-minute visit in many cases. Traditional RCT often requires two 60-minute treatment sessions. Dr. O’Leary’s personal philosophy is to never stop growing. As a result, she has developed a special interest in treating chal- lenging cases and helping patients who have experienced less- than-desirable results after RCT. In fact, half of her cases are retreating previous root canals. Dr. O’Leary never limits the number of visits or the amount of time it takes to complete root canal treatment, and prioritizes the best possible result. She finds great reward in making a positive change in her patients’ lives, and her patients appreciate her devotion to providing gen- tle, compassionate care. Dr. O’Leary is enthusiastic about the addition of the Gentle- Wave Procedure to her practice and is pleased to be able to offer her patients this cutting-edge treatment and its benefits. Dr. O’Leary’s practice, Advanced Microendodontics, PC is located at 6217 Chapel Hill, Suite 107 in Plano, Texas. For more information call (972) 403-8000 or visit www.amedds.com. Platform preparation consists of placing conforming resin material, such as Kool-Dam, onto a matrix which is then fitted over the tooth. The material is then light cured. The purpose of the platform is to provide a sealed environment for effective cleaning and disinfection of the root canal space. The GentleWave system is FDA-cleared and was first released in the U.S. in 2014. The GentleWave Procedure is backed by sci- entific data that has confirmed its superior effectiveness com- pared to conventional RCT. Pilot studies that preceded the release of the GentleWave System showed that Multisonic Ultracleaning™ with 3% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) followed by 8% ethylene diamine-tetra-acetic acid (EDTA) can help to clean and disinfect the root canal system and dissolve the smear layer, especially in the apical third and deep into dentinal tubules where bacteria are most likely to remain. 5 Histological assessment revealed that in mesiobuccal and mesiolingual canals, conventional rotary instrumentation and irrigation re- sulted in 67.8% cleaning and the GentleWave Procedure which utilized minimal instrumentation resulted in 97.2% cleaning. 1 The procedure instrument is then placed over the platform and the system delivers multisonic energy along with advanced fluid d ynamics to clean and disinfect the canals. www.northtexasdentistry.com | NORTH TEXAS DENTISTRY 9
