THE PATIENT
A 38-year-old Caucasian female with uncontrolled diabetes and NKDA was referred to our office by a friend for a second opinion to treat a severe case of gingival inflammation . Patient smokes one pack of cigarettes per day .
Previous dentist recommended full upper and lower dentures .
The patient ' s chief complaint was " I wake up every morning with blood on my pillow ."
CLINICAL EVALUATION
Clinical evaluation revealed deep probing depths , spontaneous bleeding , suppuration , radiographic bone loss , clinical attachment loss , gingival enlargement , mobility and halitosis , with an anterior open bite and caries .
Medical interconsult done to adjust / change oral antihyperglycemic prescriptions in order to achieve adequate glycemic control . Oral hygiene instruction with thorough prophylaxis was given two weeks before the procedure .
