What new development in dentistry excites you the most for its potential effect on patient care ?
There has been a major shift in dentistry in the past 20 years with more and more patients opting to find a dental practitioner who accepts their dental insurance . In addition , there has been a significant increase in private equity investors enticed by the low rate of default in the dental industry and promising return on investment rates . This has led to the formation of several corporate dental offices owned by a group of individuals with no dental background . Such factors are key in the recent development of a new concept in dentistry that focuses on grouping dental practitioners together to obtain significant negotiation power with insurance companies and dental suppliers without being controlled by individuals who have minimal understanding of the importance of quality patient care .

What do you think is one of the most significant developments on the horizon in the endodontic field ?
Research has taken us further and further into advancing our understanding of the changes that take place at a cellular and microbiological level in and around the pulpal and periodontal tissue . This includes changes when the tissue gets infected with microorganisms and when it recovers . This has in turn opened the doors to investigating new treatment modalities in endodontics such as root and pulpal regeneration . This is a significant step in treating immature permanent teeth with periapical infections and retaining them while allowing the root to continue to develop .
How has new technology changed and improved endodontic care ?
The morphology of root canal systems is complex . Root canals are not round hollow tubes but are regularly asymmetrical or oval in cross section . They contain many inaccessible areas where bacteria may be present in the form of a biofilm . Cone Beam Computed Tomography ( CBCT ) has given us great insight into the presence of these hidden morphologies and continues to provide indispensable help in diagnosis and treatment . The use of the operating microscope is currently the standard of care for endodontic treatment . Current research reveals a signi - ficantly higher prognosis when using a microscope . The combined use of CBCT technology and the dental microscope has proven in clinical research , to provide higher success in treating complex root canals and providing a more predictable outcome .
