PONDERAY FISH AREN’T PICKY
C
addis hatches in Northern
Idaho usually start in June and
go into October with the peak
months in July and August. Fish
key in on caddis, and fishing is good
all day—however, presentations can
vary depending on what the bugs are
doing.
The fish in north Idaho aren’t picky like
fish on the other rivers throughout
southern Idaho and Montana. Most
anglers simply use an Elk Hair Caddis
or Goddard Caddis for dry fly fishing.
One of my favorite strategies is
running a dropper off of a high floating
dry. This seems to produce on water
around Sandpoint.
Our shop in Sandpoint stocks a variety
of caddis in several sizes and colors.
The Elk Hair Caddis in tan or brown
is our most popular. The X-Caddis in
the same colors also works very well.
My Favorite is the Rainy’s X-Fly. We
also carry: Goddard Caddis, Bloom’s
Caddis, X-Caddis, Lawson’s Emerger,
Partridge Caddis Emergers, Slickwater
Caddis, Graphic Caddis, Taylor’s Gut
Instinct, and several others in nymphs
and emergers.
