S mart , la voiture du futur
Née de la rencontre entre Mercedes-Benz et les montres Swatch, smart est
une entité très originale de Daimler-Benz AG.
Comment l'idée est-elle née ?
En 1972, Johann Tomforde, ingénieur chez Mercedes, conçoit un prototype d'une
voiture ne dépassant pas 2,50 mètres. Cependant, ni ce projet, ni un second de 1981,
n’aboutissent, compte tenu des critères de sécurité et des coûts de production.
Au début des année 1990, Nicolas Hayek, l'inventeur des montres Swatch, développe
l’idée innovante d’une micro-citadine populaire et écologique, possédant des moteurs
électriques dans les roues et des pièces de carrosserie interchangeables.
En 1994, grâce à un accord avec Mercedes, la société Micro Compact Car AG (MCC) voit
le jour en Suisse mais Nicolas Hayek revend ses parts à Daimler-Benz AG, suite à des
divergences de visions.
En 1997, la smart city coupé (fortwo) est dévoilée pour une commercialisation en 1998.
D'où provient le nom ?
Le nom smart est la combinaison du "S" de Swatch", du "M" de Mercedes et du suffixe
"art". De plus, en anglais, smart signifie intelligent, astucieux mais également précieux
et élégant.

How does this idea grow ?
In 1972, Mercedes engineer Johann Tomforde designed a compact prototype not
exceeding 2.50 meters. However, neither this project nor a second from 1981 succeeds
in view of safety criteria and estimation of production costs.
At the beginning of the 1990s, Nicolas Hayek, the inventor of Swatch watches, develops
the idea of a popular and ecological micro-city car with electric motors in the wheels and
with some interchangeable coloured bodyparts.
In 1994, thanks to an agreement with Mercedes, the company Micro Compact Car AG
(MCC) is founded in Switzerland but finally Nicolas Hayek resells his shares to Daimler-
Benz AG due to diverging visions.
In 1997, the smart city coupé (fortwo) is revealed and delivered in 1998.
