to chief
The Englishtown Police Department swore in its first
new police chief in nearly a decade on Jan. 23. South
Brunswick Local 166 member Peter Cooke was sworn
in for the position that was reestablished by the bor-
ough council in April 2018.
Though the police chief title might be new to Cooke,
the Local 166 member has served as officer-in-charge
since 2011, following the retirement of the Englishtown
Police Department’s former chief, John Niziolek, in
2010.
“These last eight years, I’ve been working toward
this, pushing for it, and I was very happy the council
decided it was time to put the police chief’s position
back in the department,” Cooke stated.
Councilman Gregory Wojyn administered the oath
of office and Cooke’s wife, Councilwoman Lori Cooke,
pinned on the chief’s badge during the ceremony.
Cooke’s daughters Elizabeth and Emily and son Timo-
thy also participated in the swearing-in ceremony.
