A round of thanks
Let me start with a reminder that our March Local 600 meeting will be held in
Atlantic City, in conjunction with the NJ State PBA Mini Convention at Bally’s.
I’ve included information on this page for our Local 600 Scholarship program
and for the New Jersey Devils Hockey Law Enforcement Appreciation Night.
Please take notice of the deadlines for both. Scholarship applications must be
submitted to the committee no later than April 27.
Appreciation for volunteers and staff. Once again, let me thank all our vol-
unteers who came in to the office and worked hard to get out the annual infor-
JIM
mational letters and cards for new members and renewals. We have come to ex-
TOMA
pect these members to show up each year and provide this important support,
STATE
but they should know that we all rely on them and could not function efficiently
DELEGATE without them.
Also, thanks to the Executive Board members who take care of the merchan-
dise orders and the family card orders. Without Tom Lombardi, Nate Horowitz, John Shar-
key, Lou Tuccillo, Carmen Brocato, Steve Wilczynski, Ed Frischkorn and Tom Milmoe, checks
wouldn’t be counted, money wouldn’t be deposited and merchandise wouldn’t be ordered, dis-
tributed or mailed.
And I’d like to give a special thanks to Sarah Drost. Given all that she does, it would be a dis-
service to call her our office secretary. So many of us call on Sarah for assistance in many areas
of the Local 600 operations. She has been an able assistant to me in the management of the
benefits that we offer, so I personally thank her, as well as the rest of the Local.
Legislative update. A quick note on Senate Bill 5, which would transfer management of our
PFRS from the Division of Pension and Benefits within the State Department of Treasury to the
Board of Trustees of the PFRS. This bill gives the people who are impacted the most by the PFRS
a say in how it’s managed. Please go to the New Jersey Legislature website and read the bill.
Without passage of this bill, I don’t see how retirees will ever get back COLA in any form. The
bill has been approved by the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee, and hopefully it is
on its way to quick approval in the legislature and will be signed by Governor Murphy. We owe
a special thanks to the State PBA leadership for continuing this fight against long odds for all
PFRS members, active and retired. I believe it’s in our best interest to work with the State PBA
leadership.
We are keeping an eye on several other bills that are important to many members, including
age restrictions on carrying firearms. We appreciate the members who keep us up to date on
the actions of these bills. d
