In late July, Nobel Laureate economist James J. Heckman and

his colleagues released an important independent evaluation that showed Nurse-Family Partnership improves short- and long-term outcomes for mothers and their children. The study adds to previous research of Nurse-Family Partnership and

re-examined the randomized, controlled trial of Nurse-Family Partnership conducted in Memphis, Tennessee. New differences in outcomes were noted by gender. The researchers found that for those mothers that participated in Nurse-Family Partnership, their sons had improved birth weights and better educational achievement at age 12. The study also showed that participation in Nurse-Family Partnership improved the mothers’ mental health and positive parenting attitudes and their children (both boys and girls) had improved cognitive skills.
