A tiny baby’s hand reaching out to hold your finger…the whiff of a newborn…it’s a tender and delicate moment to be a parent for the first time. Your world can suddenly be filled with so much hope for new life and beginnings. Who will that baby grow up to be?

And then the responsibility sets in of how to care for this tiny baby reaching out for you. Every parent suddenly has to figure out how to do so many things fast and also financially provide for her baby. Take this new parent challenge and multiply it by the poverty factor makes it incredibly overwhelming for our young moms in Nurse-Family Partnership. A nurse arriving at a new mom’s front door to relieve her anxieties and answer her questions comes just in the nick of time.

These first few weeks of a baby’s life are especially precious. The 1000 days from pregnancy until a child’s second birthday

create the foundation for the trajectory of

what opportunities that child

will have as an adult. Research

shows the critical need to not

only provide babies with a

safe place to sleep and

enough food – but with meaningful interaction during this imperative time

period to stimulate their

brains. Science shows

what babies feeling

loved and cared for

can bring. This trust that babies have in their mommies and daddies – from hearing them talk to them and look upon them – sparks billions of baby brain connections that can make a difference in their behavior, ability to learn and response to challenges later in life.

At Nurse-Family Partnership we want to reach as many new moms as we can to help the next generation be ready for learning and more resilient in the face of challenges. Our nurses are there to guide new moms through innovations like our DANCE initiative – helping them understand how to have joyful, loving connections with their babies and support their babies’ learning.

Brighter starts for babies can direct their entire future. We will continue together to give babies born this year a better foundation in this 1000-day window – built by their newbie parents, backed by our nurses and supported by our greater NFP family.
