The Nurse-Family Partnership program in Philadelphia serves a population that is 72 percent African-American and 20 percent Hispanic, so nurses there are focused intently on helping more moms breastfeed. Research shows dramatic benefits of breastfeeding for both babies and moms. NFP of Philadelphia won a grant from the National Association of City and County Health Organizations (NACCHO) and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to boost breastfeeding through better peer support and visits from breastfeeding experts known as International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs).
