JULY, 2019 TECHNICITY small business leader EDITION ISSUE #01 Business Technology + Synchronicity WHAT IS TECHNICITY? H ave you ever had something just “work out” when you weren’t sure how it would happen? The times where you are searching for a solution for something, and a friend or colleague just happens to call with the answer? Or the seemingly perfect song comes on the radio that propels you to think about something differently? Some may just call it luck—a sporadic, fortunate event—but I like to call it synchronicity. Synchronicity is defined as “the simultaneous occurrence of events which appear significantly related but have no discernible causal connection.” I think these moments may happen for us all more often than we may think, and can and do happen in business, but we may be missing them. In his PhD paper “Synchronicity and Leadership,” Phillip Merry—founder of PMCG, a business consulting group based in Singapore—gives a great example: “For the last 25 years, I have run my own consulting business, and on November 17, 1995, I was assessing my company’s monthly finances and realized that I needed $15,000 to balance the books that month. I wondered to myself, ‘How am I going to find $15,000?’ It was 3:50 pm. At 4:00 pm, I received a phone call from my Dutch partner Dr. Fons Trompenaars, who was booked to speak in Beijing the following week but could not attend. He asked me to speak in his place and indicated that the fee would be $15,000. I needed $15,000, and within 10 minutes, it appeared.” “I am open to the guidance of synchronicity, and do not let expectations hinder my path.” – Dalai Lama He goes on to talk about a Norwegian MD of a European telecom firm in Bangkok, who shared with him that “he made most of his business decisions using intuition and synchronicity, and he asked (him) not to tell his staff.” When he had asked him why he didn’t want his staff to know, “he said he was afraid that his credibility as a leader would be affected.” Carl Jung, who coined the term synchronicity, said: “In most cases, they (synchronistic events) were things, which people do not talk about for fear of exposing themselves to thoughtless ridicule. I was amazed to see how many people have had experiences of this kind and how carefully the secret was guarded.” (Jung, 1952, par. 816) I like to believe that synchronistic events are clues that point us in the right direction. This newsletter is our attempt to increase the synchronous moments within our company (which provides services around business technology) and all that encounter our company—employees, clients, and partners—hence the name, Technicity [Business Technology + Synchronicity]. We hope to provide a good mix of helpful information around technology, leadership, and work-life balance. From a quote that provides inspiration to a service that could truly help your business, and everything in between. It is our aspiration that you can gain some piece of information that will help you along your journey so things find a way to “work out” for you. Whether or not you attribute that to synchronicity is up to you! Jaclyn Morse- Vice President, A M Exclusive Business Machines, Inc.
